So often in life, change or growth happens intangibly; as artists, I love that we’re blessed to have such a visual record of our evolution. Here’s a look at my own journey over the past six years of growing as a sketch artist.
Sketches – Asia
Sketching Nepal: At home in the jungle
A love for simplicity is one of the greatest gifts my time in Asia gave me—or as Rilke wisely once said, a love for “the small things…great and immeasurable.” This short story from Nepal is in praise of such simplicity.
Sketching India: In praise of timeless places
A deep love for spiced chai wasn’t the only thing I inherited from my time in India. I also discovered a love for long train journeys, a desire to live simply, and—most of all—an appreciation for timeless places.
Sketching Indonesia: On music and the magic of connection
Traveling isn’t only about discovering different cultures and new corners of the world; a special kind of magic happens when we bring what we love with us on a journey, and then share that love with the world.
Sketching Peru: In praise of the eternal moment
Although I loved witnessing the world wonder of Machu Picchu, the greatest wonder I felt in Peru occurred on a much smaller scale—the scale of single slices of pineapple and of simple gifts, given simply.
Summer’s Sketchbook 2014.
From beautiful Vashon Island in the Pacific Northwest to the infinite beaches of the Outer Banks in North Carolina, I tried to pull out my sketchbook as often as possible during this stateside summer.
Summer’s Sketchbook: Inaugural edition.
I’m fascinated by how different the sketches in this Summer’s Sketchbook are. I’ve always loved that about art – how we each draw with our own “voice.” How boring would it be if we all sketched the world exactly the same?
Six weeks of Beneath the Lantern’s Glow…and a book-versary giveaway!
Although i’s hard to believe that six weeks have officially passed since the launch of Beneath the Lantern’s Glow, I still want to take a moment and say thank you to everyone who has ordered it – it’s thrilling to now see the book in your hands!
It’s launch time: A final countdown to Beneath the Lantern’s Glow.
Through it all, I’m so grateful for the gift of these last two months – for not only have I been able to be present with my family, but I’ve also had the time to put together and publish my first book of travel sketches, Beneath the Lantern’s Glow.
Beneath the Lantern’s Glow: Introducing the book of travel sketches…and a giveaway!
There was a single round lantern directly above my head, floating over two banana trees. On a night when I’d felt entirely disconnected from the city, I was suddenly right where I needed to be. I was beneath the lantern’s glow.
