Snow fell over London again last night and as the white flakes began to accumulate on the ground, I found myself remembering a warmer clime a few thousand miles away:

Bangkok.

It’s been over two years since I visited the Thai capitol with my mother and our family friends, but the sights and sounds of the city still make for a great escape from the greyed-out monochromaticness of London.

It isn’t really the heat I miss [in fact my hair’s quite grateful to be out of that humidity], but the shimmering colors and textures–specifically those at Bangkok’s Grand Palace.

After arriving by water on the Chaophraya Express Boat, we spent the morning wandering the palace compound and getting a peek at the Emerald Buddha before catching a tuk tuk to the Reclining Buddha. But it was the glimmering gilded exterior of the palace that stuck with me the most…

Get lost with me in the gold and gems:

  • Your pics of the Palace are beautiful – makes me want to pack up and head to Thailand! I would love to escape winter and go just about anywhere warmer right now.

  • Candace, these photos are exquisite! I did a project on Thailand when I was 10 and I have been in love with the idea of it ever since. I still haven’t visited yet because so many other locations just managed to push their way to the top of the list.

Each of these photos is just lovely – you’ve reignited that fire!

    • Thank you, Emm! I’m so excited to hear this post has got you itching to see Thailand again–I only spent three weeks there, but really did enjoy the country. And I completely understand the fascination that comes from those school projects we do early on…when I was 12 I built a Mongolian yurt model from popsicle sticks and brown felt…ever since then I’ve wanted to go and see the real thing 🙂

        • Ah, Mongolia…the Mongol Rally is on my long-term bucket list for sure. I don’t know when I’ll get the opportunity, but I’d love to do it 🙂 Have you been? (tempted to do the rally?!)

        • No, unfortunately not. I’ve really only been to a handful of countries but I have travelled around South Africa and Great Britain a lot to make up for it!

        • That’s awesome! More and more I find my travel philosophy is becoming not so much about how many countries I visit, but how well I can get to know the ones I do. Sounds like yours might be the same 🙂

    • Thank you, Sonja! You basically stop whenever your camera’s memory card yells, “enough!” It was a beautiful country and I found the temples especially fun to photograph 🙂 Have you ever been to Thailand?

  • Awesome pictures! 🙂 All of them are so lively. By the way, all your posts about different countries keep reminding me about my dream of travelling, I just hope one day I get a chance to! Anyways, with my Swiss internship at stake, I might miss out on an amazing start. 🙁
Take care and keep enjoying. 🙂

    • Thank you, Nirmit! I’m so sorry to hear your internship might not work out–I know how excited you were, so that must be so disappointing to think it might not happen. I’m glad to hear my posts are a bit of inspiration, and hopefully they’ll give you lots of ideas of where to go and what to see once you get out on the road 🙂 Don’t give up hope on the internship just yet…and keep those travel dreams coming! Take care, my friend.

  • Confirmation of a “NO” for Swiss Visa! With all the deadlines for other universities gone, I guess I’ll have to stay back in India only in this summer. I hope you are doing good.
    Take care.

    • Oh, no…I’m so sorry to hear that, Nirmit. One of the things that frustrates me so much in life is government bureaucracy. That’s really disappointing the visa didn’t come through and now you can’t study abroad. Keep your chin up and look out for your next opportunity! Take care, my friend.
