“Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to.”
— Bill Vaughn
It’s that time again: when, whether or not you have plans for the night, you can’t help but be infected by the excitement in the air. The buzz of one year coming to an end and another about to begin, the thrill of fireworks and champagne and “Auld Lang Syne” (I think I spelled that right…).
This year’s big NYE celebration will look a bit different for me: I’m off to the town I went to university in for the wedding of an old friend. The chance to catch up with friends I haven’t seen for years is bound to make this night even more fun, but before I leave, I wanted to take the chance to wish you all a very happy new year (and bring back a few photos of the many fireworks from Diwali celebrations two months ago in India…).
As I get ready to dash off, I’ll leave you with one last quote in 2011, this one from Hamilton Wright Mabie:
“New Year’s Eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights.”
Happy New Year, everyone!
